Vergennes, Vermont

map

At one square mile, Vergennes is the smallest chartered city in Vermont. It is also the third-oldest in the United States. Located six miles from Lake Champlain on the Otter Creek, the lake defines much of what it is and was. It is the current location of Button Bay State Park (so named for the button-shaped rocks one can find on its shores), Basin Harbor and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. Benedict Arnold build the fleet here that he used to stop the British advances in 1776, as did Thomas Macdonough, who used his fleet to defeat the British in 1814's Battle of Plattsburgh.

Lodging:

Basin Harbor Club - Some of our guests prefer the comfort and convenience of rooming in the Lodge, the Champlain House or the historic Homestead. Others prefer the quiet and seclusion afforded them by one of our 77 cottages scattered throughout the grounds.

Button Bay State Park - The camping area is generally an open, grassy area overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains to the west. There are 73 sites including 13 lean-tos.

Emerson Guest House - Emerson Guest House is an 1850 Victorian Bed & Breakfast.

Strong House Inn - Beneath the striking beauty and comfortable setting of this Federal House structure is a heritage rich in tradition and of both local and national historic significance.

Restaurants:

Basin Harbor Club - The lakeside Main Dining Room serves breakfast and dinner daily. Sunday Jazz Brunches are legendary, and seafood buffets and cookouts are always favorites. The casual Red Mill, open daily for lunch and dinner, features lighter fare of burgers, salads, vegetarian and seafood.
